I bet you have no idea what the frame is or what any of the parts are…so how do you know it sucks?
Looks like an older Kona Cinder Cone (around $1.2k US) with new parts. It sounds really well tuned, and since he is a pro mechanic – his bike is better than anything you own.

FYI having a bell shows some common sense, it alerts other trail users that you are coming especially around blind corners. Really nice on multiple use trails. It also nice way way to let slower riders know that you are behind them and want to pass. Some cities actually require them if the bike is used on the street, lets pedestrians know your there.
